Tehran: Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei delivered a stern warning to the United States (US) on Thursday, asserting that American military bases in the Middle East will face attacks if they remain operational. The was the first public statement by Mojtaba Khamenei since taking over as the Supreme Leader of Iran amid the Middle East War with the US and Israel.

What did Mojtaba Khamenei say?

Iran's new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has hinted that pressure could be used to close the Strait of Hormuz. This was his first public message since assuming office, broadcast on state television on Thursday. The new leader's statement comes at a time when the global oil market is in turmoil due to Iran's continued attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure in the Persian Gulf. The price of Brent crude oil has once again risen above $100 per barrel.

“All US bases should be immediately closed in the region otherwise they will be attacked,” Khamenei was quoted as saying.

In his address to the nation, Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mohammad Mojtaba Khamenei, appealed for national unity. He said that the Strait of Hormuz will be kept closed to put pressure on enemies. He clearly stated that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed, calling it a powerful means of putting pressure on Iran's enemies. He emphasized friendship with neighbors, but vowed to continue targeting American bases.

What did Mojtaba Khamenei say about US bases?

During his address, Khamenei demanded the immediate closure of all US military bases in the region. He warned that if these bases are not removed, they will be attacked. He clarified that Iran is only targeting US bases and there will be no change in this policy.

This statement by Iran's new Supreme Leader comes at a time when tensions in the Middle East are high and oil prices are witnessing a sharp rise. Iran's tough stance has further increased concern in the international community.

What did the United Nations say? 

Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported on Thursday that approximately 3.2 million Iranian citizens have been displaced within the country since the US-Israeli attacks on Iran began. Ayaki Ito, head of the UNHCR's emergency assistance team and Middle East Emergency Refugee Response Coordinator, said that according to preliminary estimates, between 600,000 and 100,000 families have been temporarily displaced within Iran as a result of the ongoing conflict.

The coordinator stated that this number reaches approximately 3.2 million people. He warned that this figure will rise alarmingly if the conflict continues. Ito explained that most of the displaced people are reportedly "fleeing from Tehran and other major urban areas to the northern parts of the country and rural areas in search of safety." He said refugee families living in Iran, most of whom are Afghans, have also been affected.
